Our Beloved Rescue Dog, Syrus
May 1993 - December 8, 2005
Syrus was our token rescue dog. He lived to a wonderful age of 13 1/2 years of age. He was an avid sled dog who was happiest when accompanying us on a sledding journey -- it was in his blood. Syrus was the first foster dog we took in for the AMHL, and we clearly failed at our first attempt at fostering because we ended up adopting him within three days of knowing him. We just couldn't bear the thought of adding anymore turmoil to his life, and he was clearly happy out in the kennel beside Ruby and Tkaya. Syrus was a neglected sled dog who knew nothing more than life tied to a tree and the odd sledding romp. When he arrived here, he was covered in hot spots from head to toe and had to be shaved down. In addition, his collar was imbedded in the skin around his neck and had to be cut out. He did not know love, and the sight of a hand made him cower. With us he learned what it meant to be loved and learned to welcome a full body hug. He was always comforted by the presence of Ruby and Tkaya. Together they created a very powerful and beautiful 3-dog team. Syrus became a fixture here, his eyes said "thank-you" to me every day. He was a sweet, soft dog who loved to have his armpits scratched and who delighted in a new hay delivery as if he had won a lottery.
As cancer took over his body quickly in his last weeks, he remained determined to go on walks. So, in heavy snowfall and little daylight, we'd venture out together. When conditions were bone chilling and snow was blinding, I'd start to whine and complain and he'd put his head down and forge on. I know his message to me was, "when the going gets tough, and you don't think you can go on, put your head down and stay on course -- you will eventually reach your goal, just stay on course and don't lose focus." THAT, is a true sled dog philosophy if I ever heard one, and Syrus definitely lived that way. He died so peacefully in my arms and took his trusty harness with him. I know he is putting it to good use at the Rainbow Bridge with all the other sled dogs that went before. We will miss Syrus: his soft eyes, his incessant bark at dinner time, our walks and his presence in wheel position on Ruby and Tkaya's team. He used to amuse himself by hopping the traces, similar to how a water skiier would show off by hopping over the wake. I'd stand on the runners and laugh. Rest peacefully, dear Syrus and know just how much you were loved and appreciated. Thank-you, friend. Love, Your Lady and Man XXOO.
